Grant Writing

Doctoral Research

Writing grant applications is a part of graduate school's hidden curriculum that can be confusing to navigate without institutional support and has a big impact on student success. One of the things that helped me the most with writing grant applications is reading the successful applications of students who applied to the grants before me, so I have shared here some of my own successful grant applications.

• RBS-UVA Fellowship, Rare Book School. This grant provides tuition funding plus a $250 stipend to participate in a summer course at the Rare Book School. For this fellowship, I had to write a letter to the course instructor and a short essay explaining how the course content would complement my research.
• Bordin-Gillette Researcher Travel Fellowship, University of Michigan Bentley Historical Library. This grant provides $2k in travel funds to do archival research at the University of Michigan's Bentley Historical Library. Here is my application.
• Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship. In 2022 I received this fellowship from the Dolores Liebmann Fund, which provides $18k of support a year for 3 years. Here is my statement of purpose.
• UVa Scholars' Lab Praxis Program Fellowship. For the 2021-2022 academic year I was a Praxis Program fellow in the Scholars' Lab, which bought me out of teaching responsibilities and taught me skills in the digital humanities. Applicants must write a letter of interest.
• UVa Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Summer Research Grant. This grant through the Graduate School of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at UVa provides funding up to $5k for summer research. Applicants must submit a project statement and a budget.
• UVa Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Council Research Grant. The GSASC awards up to $750 to support graduate student research. Applicants must submit a research statement including a budget and a feasibility statement.
